Reading at Farthinghoe Community Primary School and our 'Reading Journey'
This year we have moved from using Phonics play to the Early Years and Keystage 1 'Read, Write Inc' reading scheme. Within this scheme, there are fiction and non-fiction books which correlate to the National Book Bands (see link below).
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a structured programme is designed to ensure all children learn to read accurately and fluently. Comprehensive planning is provided for teachers so they can channel their energy and creativity into teaching fun and engaging lessons. Read Write Inc phonics is aligned to the National Curriculum.
From the middle of year 2, the school will use a vast selection of reading books (from a range of reading schemes), which are carefully graded by reading levels known as book bands. Children are expected to reach the highest level (purple) by 7 years old.
Children who read above this level are reading fairly fluently and although some books are graded above this level, children are still reading such a wide range of material that the banding becomes not so important. The link below shows what colour band you can expect your child to be reading in school and at home. The books will vary in a number of ways including layout, size, vocabulary and length to give the children a rich diet of literature. The difference between each colour band/number stage is very gradual, so that children do not experience a great difficultly moving up through the scheme.
Details of book bands can be found here
Our 'Reading Journey' will take us across the UK, The World and beyond. We will meet friends, enemies, fairies, robots and even talking animals. We will imagine we are a river, a sea or space. Each child at Farthinghoe School will read a rich variety of books. They will be listened to by an adult every week and they will talk about the books they are reading.

"The behaviour of pupils is outstanding. Pupils are polite and considerate to each other and to adults. Their very positive attitudes to learning make a significant contribution to their outstanding achievement" - Ofsted February 2015
